It was getting fairly late, I said I had to go But when the devil offered, Lord, I had myself one more All ambition, tumbled down then My baby left me said my drinking turned to drowning Well my baby was in the kitchen, cleaning on her knees Feeling like damage control following me All her sadness in her words resounding My baby left me said my drinking turned to drowning Well my drinking turned to drowning, I was drowning everyday Another shot, a pint, a bottle, I'd be on my way All my loss, in her eyes I found and My baby left me said my drinking turned to drowning All the pain she feels Lord I know she had to go She couldn't wait for me So here I float, in a dirty moat of drunken misery If I could change there'd be no pain my baby would be with me But to my demons, I am bound and Destined from start to end, alone and drowning

Devil's Whip 03:22
I was badly bruised with a broken heart Feeling marked for death Unfit for the Land of Nod So from Eden I drove west No mind for people's talk And no mind for politics So away from the towns I'd stay And to the wild I'd stick Well, the lightning cracked like the devil's whip I nearly lost my sight A ghost crossed to the middle of the road I thought to take my life But she just smiled and turned away I guess she hadn't the thought Maybe the years I thought I owed Would be spent not bought When I entered the mountains the rains came down The water felt like tears Some manifestation (in a savage storm) Of all of my fears And from the rocks I watched the valley Crack, swell, and bleed And as her body came undone I could hear her weep Oh, I longed for my mother and the home she made And my father bought But miles away I could only see The distance I had wrought Illuminated fingertips upon a steering wheel Some day a life to call my own Of dirt and dust most real

They were just two kids, on a road to nowhere Riding in the back of some pick up truck Smiling sweetly, she moved in closer Some times, he thought, I can't believe my luck Dressed like a starlet, right out the movies Red lipstick and some big blonde curls Playing the cowboy, he called her darlin' Said anything you want, is yours in this damn world It's trust in the dark And a home to hold your heart She's all you ever needed She's all that you believe in Well on Sundays, they go out walking Through the streets of their nowhere town The rows of houses, they line the pavement A life, a place to call their home
4.
With the darkness came the cold Just a fool out chasing ghosts A whole damn country between me and my love Lost and longing for my home With all my might I held her close All through the night, never let go But in the desert, alone I awoke Lost and longing for my home Well, through El Paso I left Texas But the phones had no connection I lost contact with my love So then I started into drinking As the sadness turned to sinking Seems tomorrow never comes So if the northern way you go Up that long and frozen road You tell my baby that I'm headed for home Lost alone, but not forlorn
5.
Driving through the darkness We crossed the county line The road before us, baby, Opened wide Secrets in the shadows Through silence you spoke Words like heartbeats singing Soft and low When all affairs were settled All debts squared away Home became a highway Happiness with nothing to say So as the towns forget us Old memories left behind We'll keep searching for our home, darling Down the line
6.
Franny 03:24
Your knees they buckled your face turned white Doubling over, you lost your sight But the pain you carry, it can't defeat The light you hold, the light you'll be The ghost you miss, he only needs Your shining heart, to find his peace And through the shadows, all he'll see Is the light you hold, the light you'll be And all the darkness That finds you Will be the darkness That you'll shine through So cheer up, Franny, you'll find the light And in the morning all will be right
